Over at LeafNation.com, Cam Charron did a corsi-based analysis of Colby Armstrong and came up with mixed conclusions regarding his performance over the past several seasons.

So, causes? What caused a player with pretty good possession statistics in Atlanta to completely fall off the map in the last two seasons? System? Trust? Role? A flaw in advanced [...]

I have written a few controversial pieces here at HockeyAnalysis.com (for example, my post on Luke Schenn back when Leaf fans thought Schenn was the best thing since sliced bread) and I suspect this might generate some controversy as well because of the conclusions made about Zetterberg’s weak defensive ability.  I also want to do this [...]

With just one series remaining to be won in the second round there have been 11 playoff series won so far in these playoffs so I decided to take a look at which teams won those playoff series and the results seem to be quite telling. The team that had the better regular season goals [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post Zone Start effects on Goalie Save Percentage   2 weeks, 1 day ago · View

I am not doing it to prove a point. The zone start thing arose out of my Luongo article, not created for it. The reality is shots within 10 seconds of a face off are easier to save. Every goalie in the league has a higher save percentage on these shots than shots that occur [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post Should anyone want Luongo?   3 weeks, 1 day ago · View

Luongo is a good goalie, probably a very good one, and would make the Leafs and Lightning much better for the next 3-4 years, maybe 5 if you are lucky. Beyond that for the final 5 years of his contract, who knows. The problem with Luongo is not his talent level, nor his salary cap [...]

While doing my earlier post on Luongo’s value  I noticed that Luongo’s 5v5close zone start adjusted save percentage relative to the rest of the league is much more mediocre than his 5v5 save percentage.  I decide to look into this further and realized that this is in large part due to zone start effects, and not score [...]

I have included links to the full lists in the table in the post. List is sorted by opposition shooting percentage in ascending order, which is equivalent to goalie save percentage in descending order (just subtract OppSh% from 100 to get save percentage).

One of the most significant stories of the first round of the playoffs is the early departure of the Vancouver Canucks and the resulting question mark surrounding Roberto Luongo’s future with the Canucks.  With young super prospect Cory Schneider out playing Luongo for arguably the second straight playoff it puts Luongo’s future with the Canucks [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post On-ice shooting percentage is sustainable…   4 weeks ago · View

Not sure what you are getting at here, but like I said, it is irrelevant whether a player can influence his teammates individual shooting percentages or not (for the sake of argument I am willing to assume he can’t, or whatever you believe). All that matters is that shooting percentages (individual or on-ice) is an [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post On-ice shooting percentage is sustainable…   4 weeks ago · View

“Where there isn’t much talent is in influencing the shooting percentages of your teammates.” I am not sure I agree with that 100% but we don’t need to debate that right now because, to be honest, it is irrelevant. Regardless of how a player can drive on-ice shooting percentage, if he can drive on-ice shooting [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post On-ice shooting percentage is sustainable…   4 weeks ago · View

It was somewhat arbitrary that I selected 12 to 14 but there were actually a lot more 12 to 14 FF20 players than 7-9 SH% players, but as I type this I realize I shouldn’t have used 7-9 for shooting percentage since I used zone start adjusted data where the league-wide shooting percentage is about [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post On-ice shooting percentage is sustainable…   4 weeks, 1 day ago · View

You are right, if we just take the “average” players the correlation falls apart but this makes perfect sense. If we take a bunch of guys of similar on-ice Sh% talent, the difference between them will naturally be shot rates. For example, I took all players who had 2007-10 shooting percentages between 7.0% and 9.0% [...]

Yes it does so in theory it should be good. His HARO+ stats over the past 3 seasons are somewhat consistent, but his HARD+ rating this past season dropped off significantly. It’s difficult to determine the cause of it and whether it is an anomaly, and of course, as I stated in my post today, [...]

  • davidjohnson commented on the blog post State of the Leafs – Defense and Goaltending   1 month ago · View

Yes, Franson put up stellar defensive stats in his Nashville years, but this was in front of stellar goaltending and in very protected/easy minutes. His quality of competition is quite low. This past season with the Leafs his ratings dropped off significantly, but not to a horrible level considering the team. I don’t think we [...]

  • davidjohnson wrote a new blog post: On-ice shooting percentage is sustainable…   1 month ago · View

ThumbnailPrior to the season Gabe Desjardins and I had a conversation over at MC79hockey.com where I predicted several players would combine for a 5v5 on-ice shooting percentage above 10.0% while league average is just shy of 8.0%.  I documented this in a post prior to the season .  In short, I predicted the following: Crosby, Gaborik, Ryan, St. Louis, H. Sedin, [...]
